Health screenings test, educate sheet metal workers leading up to Mesothelioma Awareness Day

Health screenings take place Sept. 23; Mesothelioma Awareness Day is Sept. 26

The Sheet Metal Occupational Health Institute Trust (SMOHIT), the health and safety arm of the unionized sheet metal, air conditioning and welding industry, will host a free health screening tomorrow (Friday, Sept. 23) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Sheet Metal Workers Local No. 20, 6450 Ameriplex Drive, for members to test for asbestos exposure, blood pressure and cholesterol, among others.

International Training Institute hires architectural specialist

With 25 years of experience, McCallum is ITI’s newest member of field staff

FAIRFAX, Va.  – The International Training Institute (ITI), the education arm of the unionized sheet metal industry, has hired Dan McCallum of Downingtown, Pennsylvania as a member of its field staff and an architectural specialist.

A graduate of the Sheet Metal Workers Local No. 19 apprenticeship program, McCallum was introduced to architectural sheet metal on the first day of his apprenticeship in 1985 and maintained a love of the skill, art and craftsmanship. Upon starting at The Warko Group in 1991, he helped to develop the mechanical and architectural sheet metal divisions of the roofing company. He also gave back to his local union by serving on committees for the Central Pennsylvania Joint Apprenticeship Training and Labor and Industry committees for nine years.

Mental health on the minds of union sheet metal workers

Member Assistance Program has trained 250 volunteers to help local members

FAIRFAX, Va. – For decades, when a member of the International Association of Sheet Metal Air, Rail and Transportation Workers, or SMART, (formerly the Sheet Metal Workers’ International Association) had a personal problem, they would turn to a fellow member for help. For small issues, friends and mentors dispensed good advice just fine. However, for those members with deeper problems such as thoughts of suicide or drug and alcohol abuse and substance use disorder, friends and mentors were lost as to what advice to give.

Ohio continues to set bar for fire life safety ordinances

City of Cleveland newest entity to ensure certified workers repair, inspect dampers

CLEVELAND – Five years ago, sheet metal locals in Ohio set a course to educate fire marshals and building inspectors in local municipalities on the importance of fire and smoke damper installation, inspection and maintenance by qualified, certified technicians. In June 2013, the first ordinance, requiring technicians and contractors to be certified by the International Certification Board (ICB), was adopted in Garfield Heights.

ICB Conference brings sheet metal professionals together for 15th year

More than 120 professionals attended joint labor, management event in April

FAIRFAX, Va. – Sheet metal industry professionals from across the country gathered in Las Vegas April 25-29 to continue their educations by attending classes, testing for certifications, and networking with industry leaders during the 15th annual ICB Conference. Approximately 127 working professionals attended the joint labor and management event and participated in 15 classes and seven certifications.

Sheet Metal Workers Local No. 20 receives Training Excellence Award

Top Notch of Indiana recognized Sheet Metal Workers Local No. 20 with the Training Excellence Award during its seventh annual Standards of Excellence Awards program luncheon on May 19 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The event honored select organizations that earned the highest level of distinction over the previous year in Indiana’s union construction industry.

Apprentices serve up community service, gain on-the-job skills

California apprentices raise money, repair air conditioning units for charities

FAIRFAX, Va. – More than 10,000 apprentices attend training at more than 150 schools across the country, so upon graduation they can become journeymen. Part of the training at the Tri Counties Sheet Metal Workers JATC, which serves San Luis Obispo, Ventura and Santa Barbara in California, includes community service, which pushes apprentices not only to become journeymen, but leaders in the sheet metal industry and their communities.

Indiana sheet metal apprentices compete with skills they, all U.S. union sheet metal apprentices learn through apprenticeship

IMG_4413FAIRFAX, Va. – Sheet Metal Workers Local No. 20 hosted more than 30 apprentices during the ninth annual Indiana Apprenticeship Competition in Indianapolis April 8-9. Students from across the state competed in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC); testing, adjusting and balancing (TAB); industrial/welding; service; and architectural. Students were awarded first through third place prizes at a ceremony on April 9. It’s a time when they get to demonstrate what they’ve learned, practice mentoring the next generation and show off their trade.
